I remember when I first heard about spirulina. It sounded like something out of a sci-fi movie! My yoga teacher, bless her tie-dye-loving heart, swore by it. She said it gave her boundless energy for her classes and hikes. Skeptical, I remained, until I saw her effortlessly lead a two-hour session after only sipping the stuff from a funny looking bottle. Okay, maybe she was onto something. I gave this smoothie a try and boy I was impressed! It's now a staple in my diet. Why? Because it's a nutritional powerhouse.

Spirulina isn't just a trendy ingredient; it's a blue-green algae that's loaded with nutrients. Think of it as a multivitamin in powder form. This smoothie is incredibly versatile. You can customize it with your favorite fruits, seeds, and nut butters to create a flavor profile that suits your taste. It's also incredibly quick to prepare, making it perfect for busy mornings or when you need a fast and healthy snack. Plus, its vibrant green color makes it look as good as it tastes. Who wouldn't want to start their day with a glass of green goodness?

📖 Instructions

  1. Gather Your Ingredients: Make sure you have all your ingredients ready. This includes your frozen banana, spinach, spirulina powder, almond milk (or any milk you prefer), chia seeds, and any additional boosters like protein powder or nut butter.
  2. Prep the Banana: Peel and freeze the banana ahead of time. Freezing it adds a creamy texture to the smoothie and eliminates the need for ice.
  3. Combine Ingredients: Place the frozen banana, spinach, spirulina powder, almond milk, and chia seeds into a high-speed blender.
  4. Blend Until Smooth: Start blending on a low speed, gradually increasing to high. Blend for about 30-60 seconds, or until the smoothie is completely smooth. Be sure to scrape down the sides of the blender as needed to ensure everything is well-combined.
  5. Check Consistency: If the smoothie is too thick, add a splash more almond milk until you reach your desired consistency. If it's too thin, add a few more frozen fruit pieces or a teaspoon of chia seeds to thicken it up.
  6. Taste and Adjust: Give the smoothie a taste. If you find the spirulina flavor too strong, add a touch of honey or maple syrup to sweeten it, or a squeeze of lemon juice to balance the flavor. You can also add more fruit to mask the taste.
  7. Pour and Enjoy: Pour the smoothie into a glass and enjoy immediately. You can also top it with extra chia seeds, shredded coconut, or fresh fruit for added texture and visual appeal.

📝 Notes

  • For a sweeter smoothie, add a date or a touch of maple syrup.
  • Add a scoop of protein powder for an extra protein boost. Chocolate protein is my favorite!
  • Feel free to add other fruits such as berries or mango for a different flavor. Maybe some pineapple?
  • If you are not used to the taste of spirulina start with 1/2 teaspoon.
