I remember the first time I tried an apple fritter. It was at a local farmer's market, and the aroma alone was enough to draw me in. The warm, cinnamon-spiced scent mixed with the sweet glaze was intoxicating! Taking that first bite was pure bliss—crispy on the outside, soft and appley on the inside. I knew right then I needed to learn how to make these at home. Now, I'm sharing my version with you. It’s not exactly the same as that market fritter (what ever is!) but it gets pretty darn close! Are you a fan of apple deserts? You should try our Apple Crumble recipe too!

🍽 Ingredients

📖 Instructions

  1. First, prep the apples: Peel, core, and dice 2 medium-sized apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp work great) into small, bite-sized pieces. Toss them with 1 tablespoon of lemon juice to prevent browning. Set aside.
  2. Now, make the batter: In a large bowl, whisk together 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour, 2 teaspoons baking powder, 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon, 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg, and 1/4 teaspoon salt. Make sure there are no lumps!
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together 3/4 cup milk, 1 large egg, 2 tablespoons granulated sugar, and 1 teaspoon vanilla extract. This is gonna give it the flavor kick!
  4. Combine wet and dry: Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and gently stir until just combined. Don't overmix; a few lumps are okay. Overmixing leads to tough fritters, and nobody wants that, right?
  5. Fold in apples: Gently fold the diced apples into the batter, ensuring they're evenly distributed.
  6. Heat the oil: Pour about 2-3 inches of vegetable oil into a heavy-bottomed pot or deep fryer. Heat over medium heat to 350°F (175°C). If you don't have a thermometer, test the oil by dropping a small amount of batter into it. It should sizzle and turn golden brown in about 2-3 minutes. Be carefull not to burn yourself!
  7. Fry the fritters: Drop spoonfuls of batter into the hot oil, being careful not to overcrowd the pot. Fry for 2-3 minutes per side, or until golden brown and cooked through. The fritters should puff up and become beautifully crisp. Keep an eye on the temperature; if they're browning too quickly, lower the heat.
  8. Drain and cool: Use a slotted spoon to transfer the fritters to a wire rack lined with paper towels to drain excess oil. Let them cool slightly before glazing.
  9. Make the glaze: In a small bowl, whisk together 1 cup powdered sugar and 2-3 tablespoons milk until smooth and creamy. Add a pinch of cinnamon for extra warmth, if desired.
  10. Glaze the fritters: Dip each fritter into the glaze, coating both sides. Place them back on the wire rack to allow the glaze to set. If you like, you can drizzle extra glaze over the top.
  11. Serve and enjoy: Serve the apple fritters warm and enjoy immediately. They're best when fresh, but can be stored in an airtight container for up to 2 days (though they may lose some of their crispiness). These go great with a glass of milk!

📝 Notes

  • For extra flavor, add 1/4 teaspoon of ground cardamom to the batter.
  • If you don't have powdered sugar, you can make your own by blending granulated sugar until it's a fine powder.
  • These are best served warm, but can be reheated in a microwave for a few seconds.
