I rememeber one 4th of July. My family and I were getting ready for the BBQ, the usual flurry of activity filling the air. My niece, Lily, who must have been around 7 at the time, was adamant about wanting to 'help'. Now, anyone with kids knows that 'helping' can often mean more mess than assistance, but I was determined to involve her. That's when the idea struck me: an American Flag Fruit Platter! It seemed like the perfect way to get her involved, keep things healthy, and add a festive touch to our gathering. We had so much fun arranging the berries and bananas, and Lily took immense pride in presenting her creation. It was a hit! Ever since, its become a tradition. So, this year. Lets keep the tradition rolling.

📖 Instructions

  1. Wash all fruits thoroughly: Gently rinse the strawberries, blueberries, and bananas under cold water. Pat them dry with a clean paper towel.
  2. Prepare the strawberries: Hull the strawberries by removing the green tops. Slice the strawberries in half or thirds, depending on their size, to create even pieces. Set aside.
  3. Prepare the blueberries: Check the blueberries for any stems or leaves. Remove any unwanted debris. Set aside the blueberries in a bowl.
  4. Peel and slice the bananas: Peel the bananas and slice them into approximately 1/2-inch thick rounds. To prevent browning, you can lightly toss the banana slices with lemon juice (optional).
  5. Arrange the blueberry field: On a large rectangular platter or serving tray, create the 'stars' section of the flag. Arrange the blueberries in the upper left corner in a rectangular shape. A good starting point is six rows of blueberries with five blueberries in each row, but adjust based on the size of your platter.
  6. Create the red stripes: Begin arranging the sliced strawberries to form the red stripes of the flag. Start just below the blueberry section and alternate rows of strawberries and banana slices to create the striped pattern.
  7. Alternate fruit rows: Continue arranging the strawberries and banana slices until you have created enough stripes to fill the platter, mimicking the American flag design.
  8. Finishing Touches: Once all the fruit is arranged, take a step back and assess the overall appearance. Adjust any slices to ensure the lines are straight and the colors are vibrant. Fill in any gaps with extra berries or banana slices.
  9. Serve Immediately or Chill: Serve the American Flag Fruit Platter immediately to enjoy the fruits at their freshest. If preparing in advance, cover the platter loosely with plastic wrap and chill in the refrigerator for no more than a few hours to prevent the bananas from browning.
  10. Optional Garnishes: For an extra touch, consider adding a small bowl of whipped cream or yogurt dip on the side for dipping. You could also sprinkle a few mint leaves for added color and freshness.

📝 Notes

  • For extra flavor, brush the banana slices with lemon juice to prevent browning.
  • Feel free to add other fruits like raspberries or blackberries for variety.
