🍽 Ingredients

📖 Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour three 9-inch round cake pans. This is super important to prevent sticking!
  2. In a large bowl, cream together 1 cup (2 sticks) of unsalted butter and 2 cups of granulated sugar until light and fluffy. Use an electric mixer for best results. If you don't have one, that's also okay!
  3. Beat in 4 large eggs, one at a time, then stir in 2 teaspoons of vanilla extract. Make sure each egg is well incorporated before adding the next.
  4. In a separate bowl, whisk together 3 cups of all-purpose flour, 3 teaspoons of baking powder, and 1/2 teaspoon of salt.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, alternating with 1 cup of milk, beginning and ending with the dry ingredients. Mix until just combined; do not overmix! This is the most important step to keep the cake moist.
  6. Divide the batter evenly into three separate bowls. Add gel food coloring to each bowl to create your desired spectrum colors. We recommend using blue, green, and yellow for a classic boy theme. Mix well until each color is evenly distributed.
  7. Pour each colored batter into the prepared cake pans. Spread evenly with a spatula.
  8. Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a wooden skewer inserted into the center comes out clean. Keep an eye on them, as oven temperatures vary!
  9. Let the cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes before inverting them onto a wire rack to cool completely.
  10. While the cakes are cooling, prepare the frosting. In a large bowl, beat together 1 cup (2 sticks) of unsalted butter and 4 cups of powdered sugar until smooth and creamy.
  11. Stir in 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract and 2-3 tablespoons of milk to reach your desired consistency. Add more milk if needed.
  12. Once the cakes are completely cool, level the tops with a serrated knife if necessary. This ensures a stable and even cake.
  13. Place one cake layer on a serving plate or cake stand. Spread a generous amount of frosting evenly over the top. Repeat with the remaining layers, stacking them on top of each other.
  14. Frost the entire cake with the remaining frosting, creating a smooth and even finish. Use an offset spatula for best results.
  15. Decorate the cake with your favorite boy-themed decorations, such as toy cars, candies, sprinkles, or edible glitter. Get creative and have fun!
  16. Chill the cake in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes before serving. This helps the frosting set and makes it easier to slice.
  17. Slice, serve, and enjoy your magnificent Boy's Success Spectrum Cake! Share the joy with friends and family. I made this mistake once, you should definitely avoid cutting it into small pieces.

📝 Notes

  • For best results, use high-quality gel food coloring to achieve vibrant and true colors.
  • Feel free to customize the cake decorations to match your boy's specific interests and achievements.
